Back and Neck Pain

The body is incredibly complex. The number of organs, body systems, and capability of the human form is amazing. It can be frustrating however when we aren’t able to do the things we are used to or want to do because of limitations. Back pain is one of the most common issues adults deal with. 80% of all adults will deal with back pain at least once during their lives.

It’s important to note that this isn’t referring to just being sore after cleaning out the garage. This is spinal pain that interferes with daily activities such as work or family life.

What are some of the causes of back pain?

There are so many different types of tissue involved in the spine.

  1. The vertebrae themselves and the joints where those bones come together.
  2. The muscles and fascia that surround and support the spine, while also allowing you to move.
  3. The nerves that innervate and come off the spinal cord itself that provide power from the brain to the rest of the body.
  4. Discs that serve as shock absorbers and provide space between the vertebrae.
  5. Numerous ligaments connecting bones to each other like little ropes that add strength and integrity.
  6. Tendons attaching muscles to the bones themselves, the list goes on.

With this much going on, it’s not surprising that things can go wrong. The brain and nervous system has to make sure all of these different pieces are working together seamlessly. It has a hard time doing that when signals coming from the brain are being cut off, or when information from those tissues is not getting back to the brain.

This is what happens with subluxations. Sub means less, and lux is a Latin root for light/energy. So subluxation is a vertebrae shifting, causing there to be decreased flow in energy and information both to and from the brain.

What can we do about it?

Remember, pain is just a sign that something is wrong. Your pain may be coming from something downstream of the nerve and your spine. The first step is always pinpointing where your pain is coming from. This is why an in depth examination and x-rays are so important. We want to know which areas are subluxated and need adjusting. We also need to see what the overall condition is so we can make educated deductions regarding healing time and recovery.

Depending on the condition of the spine, we may recommend decompression therapy in addition to adjustments, intersegmental traction, and strengthening exercises/stretches.

Lifestyle changes such as sleep position, exercise, posture, diet/hydration, work adaptations, and more are also necessary to address the underlying cause of your problem.
