Headaches are an extremely common condition. The National Headache Foundation states that as many as 45 million Americans suffer from recurring headaches, and 20% of children and adolescents suffer from headaches. Headaches are never normal, though they seem to be something that people will try to cover up with medication or ignore.
There are four main types of headaches.
- Tension-type headaches
- Migraine
- Cluster headaches
- Sinus headaches.

Tension-Type Headaches
Tension headaches are the most common type of headache, especially since they can become chronic.
They are often described as:
- Starting at the base of the skull
- and wrapping around the head
- A band that wraps around your
- head
- Dull, achy, tension type feeling
They are most common in adult women, and teenagers. There are a lot of reasons for tension type headaches but the most common causes include inadequate rest, poor posture, stress, anxiety, hunger, overexertion, and more.
Migraine Headaches
The other most common type of headache is migraine.
They are described as:
- One sided and cover a large
- amount of the head
- Pulsating or sharp pain
- Additional symptoms include
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Sensitivity to light, sound and smell

They most commonly occur between ages 15 to 55, and tend to be more common in adult women. There are a wide variety of triggers for migraines, and are unique to each person. Research shows that a family history of migraines can be a contributing factor.

Cluster Headaches
Cluster type headaches are less common.
They are described as:
- Pain by one eye
- Sharp stabbing or burning pain
- in or around the eye
- Other symptoms include
- Excessive tearing
- Stuffy or runny nose
- Drooping eyelid
Cluster headaches most commonly occur in men and tend to be heredity. Unlike other headache sufferers, people with cluster headaches may seem restless and pace during the worst of the headache.
Sinus Headaches
Sinus headaches usually occur with sinusitis or a sinus infection.
They are described as:
- Pain around the sinuses, so above the nose, under the eyes, and into the checks.
- Dull constant ache
These headaches are positional, so bending forward can make the pain worse.

Headaches and Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care has been shown to be very effective in treating acute or chronic headaches. As we make sure the vertebrae are adjusted and in alignment, it allows the nervous system to function correctly. This will relieve the strain on the nervous system and relieve the headache. While sometimes relief from the headache is immediate, it can take time to see lasting results. Remember, it took time for your symptoms to appear, and it takes time to heal.
