I am always interested to see statistics from previous years in various topics. Health statistics, growth in the local economy or population, etc. For this weeks newsletter I searched for the most commonly googled health related questions of 2024. The results prompted me to write this week about the Germ theory vs. the Terrain theory.
For those who are curious, the top searches were:
- Is bronchitis contagious?
- Is pneumonia contagious?
- What is Lupus?
- How much water should you drink a day?
- Is strep throat contagious?
- How long does the flu last?
- What causes high blood pressure?

Germ Theory
As you can see, many of the top searches were about specific diseases or conditions caused by bacteria or viruses. In the mid 1800’s, scientists began to attribute various diseases to microorganisms
that previously had gone unobserved. Theories had previously been made but no substantial evidence could be shown.

This changed once scientists were able to observe bacteria and other microorganisms via microscopes. Experiments occurred that showed how specific bacteria or virus’ caused certain conditions or diseases. As a result, hygiene and antiseptic practices were instituted in hospitals that prevented significant loss of life.
Why do some people get sick and others don’t?
While these discoveries are valuable to society, there are interesting follow up questions that come as a result.
If the presence of bacteria or virus’ is the cause of disease, why do some people get sick and others don’t? How can 10 people all get exposed to the same contagion, but only 2 or 3 get sick? When a bug sweeps through your work or children’s school, why do some people always seem to get sick and other’s avoid any problems?

This leads us to another theory that is part of the philosophy of Chiropractic and foundational to what we do every day!

Terrain Theory
Terrain refers to the physical features of an area of land. In this case, we are referring more to features of human beings and bodies.
The overall health and vitality differs between individuals. The Terrain theory states that more important than the presence of germs, is the environment of the person exposed to those germs. Some of the factors that come into play are things we can control, while others are not.
Potential factors: Age, previous or pre-existing conditions, inherited genetics, nutritional status, personal hygiene, quality of water or food, sleep quality, regular exercise, immune system strength, etc.
How does Chiropractic come into play?
Chiropractic care is all about the efficiency and strength of our bodies. Your immune system is entirely dependent on complex signaling that relies on your nervous system. Here, we find the link between chiropractic care and strengthening the immune system. If you want feel and function your best and avoid being sick, chiropractic care can help! Just this winter we have had many of our patients comment on how they have been able to avoid catching some of the bugs that go around that they usually catch. We’ll take partial credit, your body did the rest!
